March the 5th, 2015 marked an important event on the calendar of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) as its Arshad Ayub Graduate Business School (AAGBS) obtained accreditation for its Master of Business Administration program from the respectable international accreditation body The Alliance on Business Education and Scholarship for Tommorrow, a 21st Century Organization (ABEST21). The Vice Chancellor of UiTM Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Dato' Sri Prof Ir Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar is delighted with this achievement and noted that this event further adds on to the university’s continuous effort in reaching out to the international world. The announcement on the success of AAGBS has been made known by the President of ABEST21, Dr Fumio Itoh at its annual meeting in Tokyo, Japan in March this year. The full award ceremony shall take place during its 10th year anniversary celebration in July this year in Tokyo. Set up in 2005, ABEST21 is based in Tokyo and had its origin traced back in 1995. It is an international accreditation body that focuses on advancing education in business schools on the postgraduate programs. Through its global network, it encourages mutual cooperation among its member institutions in terms of  curricular and teaching materials, promoting joint research projects, courses, international symposium and global classroom opportunities. As of today, it has 60 graduate business school as its members comprising those from USA, Europe, Australia, Asia and Russia. Among other universities that have been awarded with such accreditation are Graduate School of Business Administration, Kobe University, Waseda Business School, Graduate School of Commerce, Waseda University, Graduate Business of Management, Kyoto University, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia and SP Jain School of Global Management, Singapore.

Indeed, the accreditation has brought far-reaching implications on both the program and the whole community of AAGBS at large. According to the Director of AAGBS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jaafar Pyeman, as part of the accreditation process, interview sessions were held not just with the Vice Chancellor of the university but also with him and the school management, staff and most importantly the student themselves. He added that the self-audit process has been in-depth, straightforward and focus. It requires very careful planning, systematic information gathering and solid team work from all its members. It has indeed been a tremendous help to the school in setting the right direction for the development of its program and help the staff understand where their existing strengths lie. It has additionally provided AAGBS with a framework that enables the school to demonstrate accountability to its stakeholders. The accreditation process has brought the academic community of UiTM and AAGBS in particular, together in reflecting the performance and to define targets for the coming years. The criteria that has been set by the accreditation process are high-level yet realistic and it further challenges the school to pursue continuous improvement. More importantly, the accreditation has provided AAGBS an independent test of quality and demonstrates that its MBA program meets the rigorous standards that are expected of a high quality Business School by the corporate world. Taking the words of the university Vice Chancellor, this achievement is indeed in line with the university vision in establishing UiTM as a premier university of outstanding scholarship and academic excellence in producing Bumiputra graduates who are ethical leaders and are dynamically involved in professional fields that are of world-class standards.

New Wi-Fi Antenna Enhances Wireless Coverage

newwifiantennadrtarmiziResearchers at Universiti Teknologi MARA in Malaysia have succeeded in using ionised gas in a common fluorescent light tube as an antenna for a Wi-Fi Internet router.

Wi-Fi routers are essentially two-way radios that connect digital devices to the Internet. But in many buildings, providing complete coverage is a challenge. Radio “dead spots” can occur in areas where solid walls or appliances block a router’s signal entirely, or degrade it to become so weak that a portable Wi-Fi device, such as a tablet or phone, cannot connect reliably.

When electricity flows through the argon-mercury vapour in a fluorescent tube, it forms an ionised gas or plasma. Plasma has conducting properties comparable to a common metal radio antenna. This allows an attached router to send and receive radio signals through the light tube on the standard 2.4-gigahertz Wi-Fi frequency in exactly the same way it does through a regular antenna. The router’s radio waves can ionise the gas in the tube, so it acts as an antenna whether the light is on or off.

According to the research team, the plasma found in a standard 62-centimetre light tube is highly conductive and signal measurements on a test device show that it’s strong and stable. Thus plasma compares favourably with standard metal Wi-Fi antennas for transmitting and receiving.

The prototype antenna consists of a fluorescent tube that connects to the router through a tuned wire coil in a sleeve slipped over one end. The coil passes the router’s radio signal through the glass of the fluorescent tube and into the plasma.

The team says that multiple antennas could be connected to a single router through a building’s electrical wiring using existing Wi-Fi standards. This would create a separate antenna in every room where there is a dedicated fluorescent light fixture and provide low cost building-wide wireless Internet coverage.

Further studies by the team may include adding more fluorescent tubes in various configurations to investigate the capability and performance of multiple plasma antenna arrays. One possible application could involve installing this technology in outdoor billboard lights. Each plasma antenna array would then be integrated with a Wi-Fi router to provide large-scale, system-wide wireless communication.
