UiTM FSKM made it to the finals for the World Summit for Information System (WSIS) Prizes 2020

Faculty of Computer & Mathematical Sciences, (FSKM) Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia is very proud for having two UiTM projects shortlisted for the finals at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2020.

The two projects are 1) APPRECIATE and 2) Mudir. The WSIS Prizes contest serves as a platform to evaluate project initiatives that leverage on the power of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to advance sustainable development. The winners will be announced at the WSIS Forum 2020, to be held from 6–9 April 2020 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The first project APPRECIATE which refers to addressing people in needs through education, training and services is a compilation of several subprojects that focuses on APPRECIATing people in needs who constitute rural and urban poor people, single mothers, indigenous community, elderly and also children with special needs (Autism). The objectives of the project are to provide the best services and ICT infrastructure; and imparting knowledge and skills focusing on space, content and support for targeted community. Among the activities were involvement of elderly participants in which, they need to complete a game using the Information Technology infrastructure, under the IT Philanthropy theme “IT Amazing Race with the Elderly”, other activities involved autistic teens from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Rinching, Semenyih Selangor, and a activity on STEM which offered Mathematics tuition for school students. FSKM’s second project, Mudir (Mutiara Hadis), is a free online search engine enabling not only experts, but anyone from the general public to access hadith excerpts using simple layman terms as keyword search opening opportunities for new knowledge learning. Mutiara Hadis provides an alternative solution as a better search engine for Malay translated Hadith documents as accurate hadith information retrieval is important for reference for laymen and hadith experts. By using semantic knowledge and fuzzy ranking techniques, it also provides ICT-based platforms for Malay language content retrieval and provides diverse forms of local content development for digital and traditional hadith archives that can stimulate respect towards religion and language.
